Self-initiated project to create a pamphlet for The Obby Oss of Padstow Festival held in Padstow of May 1st each year. Every year on May Day the tradition of the ‘Obby Oss’ festival takes place. It’s origins have been speculated for centuries with many believing its roots lie with Pre-Christian fertility rites. The tradition dates back to at least the medieval period, however, the Padstow ‘Oss’ with its unique, savage appearance is said to have evolved from a Padstow Sailor named Octavius Branton who on a voyage witnessed the ‘Duk Duo’ dancers of New Guinea. Returning with a mask that got introduced to the costume.
